Stucco Systems
OpenHard Coat Stucco
The hard-coat stucco system is a cement mixture used for siding residential and commercial buildings. The cement is combined with water and inert materials such as sand and lime. Usually, wooden walls are covered with tarpaper and chicken wire or galvanized metal screening. This framework is then covered with the stucco mixture, as described in detail below:
- Tarpaper: Used as a moisture barrier. To seal plywood from the elements, a layer of waterproof 2-ply tarpaper is attached to the wood with staples, covering all wood surfaces to be covered by stucco.
- Metal Lathe: The purpose of lathe is to provide a way for the plaster to adhere to the wall. Lathe is a metal mesh securely attached to the wall with staples.
- “FRP” mixed to the consistency of cement and spread onto the lath to a thickness of 3/8 inch and worked to achieve a flat surface.
- Finish (texture) coat: The finish coat is a substance that can be wielded to form a variety of colors and textures. The finish coat is applied with a thickness of approximately 1/16 inch and is extremely durable when dry. An acrylic primer is applied before the finish coat to aid in bonding, durability, water resistance, and elasticity.
Traditional Stucco – Three Coat Stucco
Three Coat Stucco systems include a waterproof building paper attached to the studs on the house and a wire lathe, which serves as the foundation for the stucco system. The first layer of cement is called the scratch layer because a notched trowel is used and creates a rough surface to which the next layer can bond. The second layer is called the brown coat. After the second layer of cement is applied, the final coat or color coat is applied.
Traditional Stucco – Thin Coat Stucco
The thin coat or fiber reinforced stucco (FRS) system is a more recent development. It is used in many types of construction over a wide variety of sheathings and substrates. Generally, it consists of a gray base coat with colored cement stucco or acrylic-based finish coat.
Synthetic Stucco (EIFS)
Synthetic stucco or Exterior Insulation Finish System (EIFS) is crack resistant and can be highly detailed. But the biggest benefit of EIFS is the increased insulation it provides to a building. This system consists of foam sheathing covered by a highly modified base coat with fiberglass mesh and an acrylic finish coat.

Venetian Plastering
Open
Italian Lime Plaster is commonly called “Venetian plaster”. A term widely Venice Gondola FirmoLux used to describe a look that was associated with the plasters that were manufactured in Northern Italy and primarily Venice. Also known as “Stucco Veneziano”, this phrase was coined by Italian-American emigrants that arrived from Italy in hopes to find streets of gold; and did when they found how popular the look and style of the product became.
Today, most experts prefer to call Venetian plaster a “technique” or “style” rather than a product. In order to avoid confusion about materials available today, many of the so called Venetian plasters used in the world today are synthetic and made by paint manufacturers to imitate the look of authentic plasters like FirmoLux.
